Pewsey Vale

Australia - Eden Valley

Pewsey Vale is a winery located in the Eden Valley in South Australia and focuses on Riesling from one enclosed single vineyard. It was the first, and remains one of the only wineries in Australia to work by this one-grape, one-vineyard philosophy for its production of wines.

In 1847, Joseph Gilbert, an Englishman, first planted the vineyards at Pewsey Vale. Some vines from the original 19th-century plantings still thrive today. In 1961, Geoffrey Parson bought the estate and discovered its historic vines. He enlisted Wyndham Hill Smith to help rejuvenate the vineyards. Initially, they planted 56 hectares (138 acres) in contoured rows in the Eden Valley. Today, part of these vines remains as Pewsey Vale vineyards. The site's soil, formed millions of years ago when a river flowed through, exposes minerals and sand. This has left soils in which Riesling flourishes.
