Strauss & Co offers an extensive range of textile artworks spanning centuries of artistic output—from tapestry and embroidery to stitching and knitting.
Our sales feature both contemporary and historic works, including Tsonga and Shangaan cloth artworks, Ndebele beadwork, and Kuba textiles, reflecting the material histories of various African countries. Some pieces are created by individual artists, while others are the result of collaborative efforts from significant art centres such as Rorke’s Drift in KwaZulu-Natal and The Keiskamma Art Project in the Eastern Cape. The selection of items we have handled includes works by contemporary artists who use materials as a form of artistic expression, such as Billie Zangewa’s silk tapestries stitched from raw silk and Igshaan Adams’ tapestries crafted from beads, wire, linoleum, cotton twine, and fabric.
