Princia Matungulu

South African

Princia Matungulu is a Johannesburg-based artist whose practice combines weaving, sculpture, and storytelling. Her intricate weaving process draws on Congolese BaLuba traditions, norms, and
values of womanhood, intersecting with the experiences of women across Africa and the diaspora. Her work explores her cultural identity as a Congolese-born immigrant in South Africa, with a focus on her relationship with her mother.

Matungulu’s recent works are inspired by traditional Congolese folktales, exploring themes like intrigue, jealousy, and love through abstract forms and figures. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts
(Hons) from the University of the Witwatersrand and was awarded the Young Womxn Studio Bursary at the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios (2021-2022). Matungulu has exhibited in numerous group shows, including at The Holy Art Gallery (London) and the Goethe-Institut (Johannesburg), and her work was featured at the 2024 Investec Cape Town Art Fair and 1-54 African Art Fair, London.
