Rose Hilton

British 1931-2019 

Rose Hilton was a British painter known for her work in Cornwall. Born into a religious family in Kent, her parents were against her becoming an artist, though she studied at the Royal College of Art. She later married Roger Hilton, a prominent abstract artist who discouraged her from painting. After his death in 1975, Hilton resumed her artistic career, gaining recognition for her post-Impressionist, figurative style influenced by Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard. Her work was celebrated with a retrospective at Tate St Ives in 2008.
