Notes
This work is drawn from a series of works Senzo Shabangu did around 2015 and 2016 exploring spatial politics. The artist is interested in the occupation of land and space by people on the move, both within South Africa as migrant labourers migrate from the rural areas to the cities and mining towns, and across national borders. In Floating II, slightly distorted buildings float about, dislocated and displaced. To the artist, the inverted and suspended buildings are symbolic of people who do not own the land, or have no title deeds and are of no fixed abode. Those who suffer the inequalities facing the majority of South Africans. Although, this is an earlier work, floating symbolic structures have remained a constant feature of Shabangu's visual vocabulary to date.
