About this Item

2011 Volnay Collection
4 (4 x 1) 750ml

Complex, elegant and long-ageing, the wines of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville in Volnay are testament to one of the great domaines in Burgundy. From 1952 until his death in 2003, Jacques d’Angerville made his family domaine the flag bearer of Volnay. As Allen Meadows writes, his winemaking methods were ‘minimalist in the extreme’. A non-interventionist winemaker, as his father before him, Jacques allowed the domaine’s fine terroirs to be fully expressed in his wines. Rather putting his efforts into the vines, he trusted in great parcels and old vines of a unique clone, ‘Pinot d’Angerville’. The domaine holds four Crus: Fremiets, on the border or Pommard, Champans, Taillepieds, and the great d’Angerville monopole Clos des Ducs. Very littles has changed since Guillaume d’Angerville took over from his father in 2003. His wines possess the magic from his father’s legacy and, today, the demand for d’Angerville cuvées might even be greater than in Jacques’ day.

Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2011
‘Pretty pinkish crimson. Much darker smelling and more savoury than the Frémiets but absolutely still red fruited and finely scented. Dry, moreish finesse. Compact, dry (in a good way) tannins. Tight and fine-grained and rather closed on the front of the palate but then spreads beautifully across the palate on the long but restrained finish. Very attractive scented fruit sweetness. Long.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Apr 2013)

‘Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet red berries are some of the many notes that come alive in d'Angerville's 2011 Volnay Caillerets. Here the style is lifted, aromatic and understated, with veins of crystalline minerality that give the wine its sense of energy and focus. Overall, this is one of the more delicate and finessed wines in the range.’ - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100 (Mar 2014)

Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 2011
‘Dark crimson. Perfumed but still quite severe in terms of tannin. Tough finish and then lovely freshness. Edgy at present but with an inner glow that is particularly promising. Very long.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Apr 2017)

‘Aromatically speaking this is almost a hypothetical blend of the Frémiets and Caillerets with its perfumed and moderately high-toned red currant nose that unveils notes of spice, stone and violets. The strikingly pure, delineated and energetic middle weight flavors display outstanding precision on the almost pungently mineral-driven, balanced and hugely long finish. This is a classic Taillepieds and while there is some of the hallmark austerity present, it is somewhat less than I'm used to seeing in this wine. A knockout but note that patience will be required.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 92-94/100 (Apr 2013)

Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 2011
'Pretty, palish crimson. Fragrant red fruit aroma, towards cherry. Sweet tasting and gentle on the palate, very gentle tannins but not without structure and a slight grip on the finish. Scented on the palate and then more savoury on the aftertaste. Already multilayered and very fresh on the finish.' - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20

Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Chapmans 2011
‘Pretty, enticing and poised on the nose, with violet and a touch of liquorice. A lovely purity of fruit in the mouth – ripe but not heavy.’ - Ella Lister, Decanter.com, 93/100

‘The 2011 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has an assured and sensual bouquet with perfumed blackberry, raspberry and almost confit-like fruit. There is detail and harmony here, the fruit beautifully enmeshed with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a silver bead of acidity all bound up in a razor-sharp line of acidity. There is impressive density with red fruit flourishing and fanning out on the finish. Superb. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.’ - Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100 (May 2019)

‘The 2011 Volnay 1er Cru Champans, here tasted from magnum, has developed a conservative bouquet with delicate touches of dried rose petals that tincture the precise red berry fruit. This was actually more expressive and exhibited more precision than its 2009 counterpart, which would appear to be closing down at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and fine tannin, the acidity extremely well judged and lending precision and tension to this Volnay Champans that I feel has improved in the last couple of years. Perhaps a 2011 Volnay on a gentle upward trajectory?’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Apr 2016)
