About this Item

2003 Volnay 1er Cru Collection
4 (2 x 2) 750ml

Complex, elegant and long-ageing, the wines of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville in Volnay are testament to one of the great domaines in Burgundy. From 1952 until his death in 2003, Jacques d’Angerville made his family domaine the flag bearer of Volnay. As Allen Meadows writes, his winemaking methods were ‘minimalist in the extreme’. A non-interventionist winemaker, as his father before him, Jacques allowed the domaine’s fine terroirs to be fully expressed in his wines. Rather putting his efforts into the vines, he trusted in great parcels and old vines of a unique clone, ‘Pinot d’Angerville’. The domaine holds four Crus: Fremiets, on the border or Pommard, Champans, Taillepieds, and the great d’Angerville monopole Clos des Ducs. Very littles has changed since Guillaume d’Angerville took over from his father in 2003. His wines possess the magic from his father’s legacy and, today, the demand for d’Angerville cuvées might even be greater than in Jacques’ day.

The lot consists of the following wines:
Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs 2003 (2 x 750ml)
Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 2003 (2 x 750ml)

Critics Ratings

Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs 2003
‘Deep and lustrous garnet. Clean and fresh on the nose without the excessive effects of extreme heat evident in many other 2003s. Just a little simple and candified on the palate. A modified success. Atypical Clos des Ducs, and actually an atypical 2003 because of its freshness, but a rewarding drink. Just a little bit dry on the end but otherwise a triumph.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Apr 2019)

‘Deep ruby. Like the '05, this is also overtly ripe yet in contrast to the darker fruit of the '05, this displays redder fruit along with nuances of stone, earth and floral hints. There is excellent mid-palate density to the impressively rich and solidly powerful flavors that are supported by plenty of firm structure that is largely buffered by the buckets of sap before culminating in a long and serious if not especially elegant finale. Though this is clearly quite ripe, it would be fair to observe that this is less marked by the extremes of the '03 vintage than most wines. In sum, this is a huge wine by the typical standards of Clos des Ducs yet it remains well-balanced and should age beautifully.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 93/100 (Mar 2017)

‘This has notes of plum, milk chocolate and spice, with dense yet polished tannins leaving a grainy effect accentuating the chocolate. Terrific length on the finish, with a burst of fruit and spice. This needs time. Best from 2008 through 2018.’ - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (May 2006)

Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 2003
‘It’s almost hard to believe but this offers even more elegance, finesse and precision than the Champans with a purity of expression that rivals the very best wines of the Côte de Beaune in 2002. This just oozes sap, which buffers the otherwise firm, mineral-infused, punchy flavors and rounds out the presently very racy finish. A wine of impeccable balance and this too is very Volnay.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 93/100 (Apr 2004)

‘Cask sample. Rich and round on the nose. Lots of acidity and texture. Rather fine. Very exciting, though needs time. Some cough-medicine quality.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jan 2004)

‘As is typical for this wine at this address, the 2002 Volnay Taillepieds displays a boisterous nose of plump, sweet black fruits. On the attack and mid-palate, this effort is extremely broad, lush, and intense. Its red and black cherry fruit is intermingled with herbs, spices, and minerals. Medium to full-bodied, it has outstanding depth, loads in reserve, and the structure for aging. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017.’ - Pierre Rovani, Wine Advocate, 90-91/100 (Jun 2004)
