Notes

Selvin November was born in, and still lives and works in Cape Town. He completed a Diploma in Art and Design at Cape Technikon and was awarded a three-month residency on Robben Island in 1996. His solo exhibitions include The Portrait Speaks at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town in 2008 and Young, Free and Single, as the Festival Artist at the University of Stellenbosch Woordfees 2019. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions. November explores socio-political issues, such as Identity, Memory and Slavery. He utilizes a visual language, born out of an African aesthetic, where he employs ‘significant form’ (Clive Bell) which is a combination of line and colour to stir aesthetic emotions. By arranging these elements in a particular space and time framework, he attempts to make sense of his reality by expressing his ideas on a painted surface.
