About this Item

2003 Vineyard Selection Jonkershoek Valley Syrah
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Neil Ellis pioneered the négotiant, or non-estate, concept of sourcing grapes from growers all over the Cape and producing wine from the early 70s and, today, has become a pillar and legend of the local industry. Neil’s vision has always been to ‘make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest’ and, with more than three decades of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon production under his belt, there are not many who could do it any better.

Mindful that no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties, Neil Ellis set out to identify distinct terroir in which individual varieties will excel. Neil’s vision has always been to ‘make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest’.

Critics Ratings

Previously ‘Shiraz’. Offers more northern-Rhône spicy warmth than premium version. 2003 bigger than previous under this label. Generous dark fruit/smoked meat endowments; lovely rich texture; firm yet unintrusive tannins; complementary toasty extras from 16 months in French oak. Burly 15% alc harnessed by terrific  fruit concentration, dry finish. Enjoy from 2008. No 2002.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2006, 4.5*

‘Saturated bright red. Aromatically expressive aromas of raspberry, coffee bean, leather, mint and sexy oak. Quite sauve and pliant in the mouth, with musky flavors of plum, game and licorice. Still a bit wound up on the back half, but this coats the mouth with sweet flavors. The tannins are dusty and substantial. I would not be surprised if this merited an even higher rating with a couple more years of bottle aging.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 90+/100 (Mar 2005)
