About this Item
Neil Ellis pioneered the négotiant, or non-estate, concept of sourcing grapes from growers all over the Cape and producing wine from the early 70s and, today, has become a pillar and legend of the local industry. Neil’s vision has always been to ‘make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest’ and, with more than three decades of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon production under his belt, there are not many who could do it any better.
Mindful that no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties, Neil Ellis set out to identify distinct terroir in which individual varieties will excel. Neil’s vision has always been to ‘make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest’.

Critics Ratings
‘ ‘Power with elegance’ - epithet applied to these wines generally - maintained in even ripe, concentrated year. Embryonic 2000, from single 10-year old Oude Nektar vineyard, presently dominated by forthright black spice, charry notes, dense tannins; though underlying sweet brambly fruit will reassert, and complexity and distinction increase from 2004-05. This more oak influenced than version below: new French casks for 16 months.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2003, 4*
‘Elegant style Shiraz, with black cherry, raspberry and blackberry fruit that stays poised and balanced. Has a juicy texture, and a long, stylish finish where additional spice, meat and mineral notes peak out. Impressive and accessible now.’ - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (May 2003)
