About this Item
Thorne & Daughters Wines was started in 2012 by John and Tasha Seccombe with the aim to produce authentic wines in the beautiful Western Cape. John works with grapes from all over the Cape and seems to have a particularly refined aesthetic when it comes to winemaking. His Thorne and Daughters family concern is truly pushing the boundaries with old vines and simple, natural winemaking.
2015 was the maiden vintage of Paper Kite for the Thorne & Daughters stable. Their searches through the Cape Winelands bore fruit in the 2015 vintage when they were lucky enough to buy some fruit from one of the oldest producing vineyards in South Africa and the oldest producing Semillon Blanc vineyard (111-year-old vineyard)
Winemakers personal tasting note:
'True to Semillon’s ability to produce very long-lived wines, the wine is very much in an embryonic phase of its life. It shows some spice, floral and savoury tones, with flavours of green melon and sweet herbs. Its incredible length is testament to the great age of the vineyard.' - John Seccombe

Critics Ratings
‘Refined 2015 from centenarian Franschhoek vines. Effortless ease from its quiet yet insinuating lemon verbena scents, silky textural flow to firm, dry and endless conclusion. Natural ferment, 9 months lees-ageing in old oak complexing extras, as on all 3 wines. Long life ahead.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2017, 4.5*
‘Taken from a vineyard that was planted in 1904 (the oldest Semillon in the Cape, apparently), this glorious 2015 is a one of for John Seccombe, alas. Old wood fermented with 100% malolactic, it’s herbal and citrus-edged with aromas of white fowers and baking spices and a chiselled, almost chalky finish. A stunning white.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2016, 95/100
