About this Item
At more than 3,200 feet above sea level within the magical Cederberg Wilderness Area, Cederberg Private Cellar is South Africa’s highest vineyard. The Nieuwoudt family have been farming in the Cederberg mountain for five generations, with vines planted as early as 1973, but the brand has been energetically driven to become one of SA wine's real success stories by David Nieuwoudt, now at the helm. Thanks to the isolation of the vineyards and the extreme winters, the vineyards are largely virus and disease free. David has single handedly established an enviable terroir identity for the Cederberg, while simultaneously building other successful, pioneering wine ventures, notably Ghost Corner in the region of Elim.
'The grapes are berry sorted by hand. Cold maceration for two days followed by two punch downs a day and gentle pump-overs throughout fermentation. Matured in new 225 litre French oak, tight grain barrels for 15 months. A selection of the best three barrels. ' - Auction Year: 2019
Critics Ratings
'Deep, dark, brooding 2017 gains extra concentration from 15% juice bleed-off prior to ferment. Huge amount of fruit (cherries, blackcurrants, plums) handles 100% new oak with aplomb. Don’t drink it now - so much more to come.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (93 pts)
'There's a sweet edge on the nose of this ripe, lush wine, with brambly berry, raspberry sauce and vanilla-soaked cherry tones that initially abound. There's a solid underlying note of crushed purple florals and violets as well. The palate is similarly smooth and plush, with an easygoing nature that leads to a peppery finish with good lift and energy, beautifully countering the wine's inherent richness.' - Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 91/100 (Sept 2019)
