About this Item

2008 Pillars Syrah
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Haskell Vineyards graces the slopes of the Helderberg mountain range in Stellenbosch, an area known as the “Golden Triangle”, widely recognized as one of South Africa’s finest wine-growing sub-regions and home to many of South Africa’s top wines.

In 2002, American/Russian property tycoon Preston Haskell IV purchased the farm Dombeya (originally part of neighbouring Rust & Vrede) and renamed it Haskell Vineyards. Shortly thereafter, Rianie Strydom joined Haskell as Winemaker and GM, and soon became the first woman to be offered membership of the Cape Winemakers Guild.

Critics Ratings

‘Pillars Shiraz’ previously. Following showstopper 2007, equally brilliant 2008 opens to explosive aromas of blackberry, liquorice & floral essences. Complex & restrained, excellent concentration of berry flavours on well-developed tannin frame. Natural fermentation, malolactic fermentation in oak, 60% new barrels.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2012, 5*

'100% Stellenbosch Syrah. Hand harvested. 14 months in 60% new French oak. Eight barrels made. Released in South Africa in Nov 2010. That tea-leaf scent again, and a bit of wood glue. Sweet, sweet intense fruit. Very concentrated. Dark plums, spice and lift. Macerated plum. Glossy and polished. Some orange notes, more finesse than the 2007, more grace, finer. That citrus note is very visible. Soft pepper. Cayenne. Lovely sharpness and thrust. Real movement; a dancer.' - Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Feb 2011)
