About this Item
Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).
Grapes for the Iron Syrah are sourced from a single parcel of 19 year old organically farmed dry land bush vines on the rolling hills with iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. This parcel of Syrah gives the best expression of the “koffieklip” terroir – broadness and mid-palate.

Critics Ratings
2015 - 'Dryland vineyard in Malmesbury hills with iron-rich koffieklip soil, giving distinctive ferrous/savoury nuance to 2015. Silky dark fruit, notes of scrub & white pepper, good tannin framework. Masterly balance, sleek & poised,'. - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2018, 4.5* (93/100)
'The 2015 Iron Syrah comes from vineyards around Malmesbury and has a very fruit-driven bouquet of raspberry coulis, red currant and wild strawberry; touches of tobacco and wet clay emerge with time. The taut, linear palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity and fine precision on an almost Cornas-like finish that grips the mouth. Very promising.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 91/100 (Aug 2018)
'Still youthfully compact, but the core of plum, blackberry and black currant fruit shows lots of juicy energy. Black tea, charcoal and singed alder notes flow through the finish. Needs time to stretch out fully. Best from 2019 through 2026.'- James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Jan 2018)
'Tricky to pick this may be, as it can get over-ripe in hot years, but the Mullineux nailed this in 2015. Grown on blood red soils, it’s a dense, rich, powerful wine with plenty of tannins, edging towards a Cornas in style. The effort was worth it. 2019-28.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 96/100
2016 - 'It may be auto-suggestion, but Iron always seems to have some ferrous grip to it, an intense, dry land Syrah with layers of tannin, blackberry and liquorice flavours and a twist of black pepper. Another Mullineux Syrah that needs time. 2022-30' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100
'The 2016 Iron Syrah delivers more red fruit on the nose than the 2016, offering cranberry, raspberry, pressed flowers and something a little exotic - marmalade and a touch of tangerine. The medium-bodied palate shows a fine bead of acidity and grips the mouth, the whole bunches lending an (appropriately enough) ferrous-like finish. Excellent ! ' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Aug 2018)
'Dryland Malmesbury hills vineyard with iron-rich koffieklip (ferricrete) soil, for distinctive ferrous/savoury nuance. Other layers include scrub, wild berries, seamed black pepper; 2016 ‘masculine’, with excellent muscle tone. Long life ahead, as 2015 - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 5* (95/100)
2017 - 'Iron has the highest clay content of the three soil-specific Mullineux Syrahs, as well as some ferrous grip, and tends to perform best in drought years. Plush, broad and complex, with palate-coating tannins, dark plum and blueberry fruit, scented oak and some clove spice from 100% whole bunches. One of a trio of superb Syrahs. 2022-32.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 96/100
'The 2017 Iron Syrah is my favorite of the four Syrahs offered by Mullineux this year. It has a wonderful bouquet of black fruit, clove, iron filings (predictabilty!) and incense that gathers momentum with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, very fine backbone and the most vigor among all their 2017's/It sports great tension on the finish and impressive persistence. Superb' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100 (Oct 2019)
'Lily, tobacco & black pepper nuances, ferrous character from dryland Malmesbury hills vineyard with deep, iron-rich koffieklip (ferricrete) soil. 2017 less compact & athletic than siblings but has excellent muscle tone, will be stellar for next decade or more.' - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2020, 5* (95/100)
