Hartenberg Gravel Hill 2005
Savoury 2005 dusted with white pepper, packed with black olives; plush fruit wrapped around taut core. All-new oaking. From ferrous-stone-on-clay vineyard.' Platter's SA Wine Guide 2010, 4.5*
Hartenberg Gravel Hill 2006
'Single vineyard. Gently sweet and dark-fruited aromas and some red cherry. Really fresh and fine but noticeable grain to the tannins. Moreish and mouthwatering. So youthful though there's a hint of something more meaty on the finish.' - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com (October 2012), 17.5/20
'If Stork is the boisterous young maiden, this is the chaperone. 06 mineral lines to piercing ethereal spice, serious but ordered, powerful length of flavour. All-new Fr oak 22 months.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2005, 4.5*
'This is showing well, with the extra bottle age lending a perfumy edge to the toasty spice, licorice, plum sauce and fig paste notes that have all melded together now. There's still plenty of stuffing, and though slightly roasted in feel the finish stays fresh enough, with ample graphite-fueled length. Syrah... 250 cases made.' - Wine Spectator (April 2012), 92/100
Hartenberg Gravel Hill 2007
'One of a trio of very different shirazes. From estate's best site - dry, gravelly, strewn with koffieklip ('coffee stones')- yielding appropriately mineral, savoury, elegant shiraz. 2007 is winemaking at its zenith: ethereal, spicy, very polished, with powerful length of flavour. - Platter's Guide, 4.5*
'Pitch black with an intensely red rim. Red and black fruit, plus spice including cinnamon and coriander seed. Very pure fruit, oak carefully judged. Great definition and freshness, wonderfully fine tannins. Plenty of grunt but everything coming together for good.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100
'Rich and chewy, with strong coffee, sage and prune notes leading the way, followed by still-chunky blackberry and mulled plum fruit. The coffee edge reasserts itself on the finish. A bit of a brute, but this dark, muscular style will win some fans. Syrah.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (2013)
