About this Item
Niels and Penny Verburg’s agenda to eschew innovation at this Bot River property, after going solo in the early 2000’s after successful wine making at nearby Beaumont, has served them well, establishing Luddite as one of the finest Shiraz producers in South Africa.

Critics Ratings
‘Always a ripe style, boldly handsome, but gets the balance right. Morello cherries & black plums savoury spice, smoky notes, scrub, powerful 2014 ticks all the shiraz boxes. Oaked 2 years, has sturdy tannins for ageing. Various bottle formats. 2013 (4.5 stars, 93 pts) also bold & ripe.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide, 5* (95/100)
‘On a different register, this has a deep, furry earthiness, smelling of warm burrows and brambles. It’s generous, intense in fruit, and deeply tannic. The alcohol is high. Described as Shiraz, it has that concentration, but teamed with the savouriness of more classical Syrah, almost like a robust, hot-vintage Cornas. Has an incredible, growling potency to age further. Aged 20% in new French, 75% old French and 5% Hungarian barrels. Drinking Window 2020 - 2032.’ – Matt Walls, Decanter, 94/100
‘A huge hit with its army of loyal fans (fellow Luddites, presumably), this is more restrained than usual in cooler 2014, with characteristic prune and dark plum flavours, firm tannins, aromatic spices, well-integrated wood and a fresh finish. Drink 2018-23.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 93/100
