About this Item

1976 Sauternes
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Founded in 1709 by Romain de Filhot, Château Filhot is now owned and managed by two of his descendants – Count Henri de Vaucelles and his son Gabriel. The large estate covers an area of 350 hectares with 62 hectares of vineyards (60% Sémillon, 36% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Muscadelle) planted all along the south of the Sauternes village. Bordered by the Landes forest and dissected by a small local river, the vineyards lie in an ideal microclimate for botrytis development. Harvest is done in a series of selections depending on the level of maturation of the grapes and the evolution of the noble rot. This long process leads to a low yield of about 10-20 hl/ha depending on the vintage.

Critics Ratings

‘The 1976 Filhot has a clear colour and actually looks more youthful than the 1979. The nose is much cleaner and more attractive than other vintages from the Seventies with barley sugar, crème brûlée, dried mango and quince aromas, all nicely defined. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, good depth and plenty of fresh orange peel and mandarin notes towards the finish. This is not going to improve in bottle so if you see this, pop open and enjoy.’ - Neal Martin, Vinous.com (May 2019)
