Born in 1981 in Zimbabwe, Kudzanai Chiurai is an internationally acclaimed young artist now living and working in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2013 Chiurai’s short film Iyeza was selecetd to be screened as part of the short films program at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The 2013 Short Film program comprised 65 short films selected from a record 8,102 submissions. Iyeza was one of only three African based short films to be selected.
Regarded as part of the “born free” generation in Zimbabwe – born one year after the country’s independence from Rhodesia – Chiurai’s early work focused on the political, economic and social strife in his homeland.
Chiurai’s work interrogates the aesthetics of propaganda, and explores the visual legacy of political representation. At the convergence of major political events – elections in South Africa, the USA and Zimbabwe – Chiurai hones in on aspects of the image of the black president and his cabinet in particular. These works unpack notions of masculinity and power. The portfolio, The Ministers, is unashamed in its parodying of Zimbabwean government ministers.
