Notes
As a celebrated artist and academic, Keith Dietrich has had twenty solo exhibitions in South Africa and his work appears in over thirty corporate and public collections, including the Standard Bank Corporate Art Collection, Iziko South African National Gallery and Wits Art Museum.
Horizons of Babel: Anysberg is part of a larger project that explores the importance of South African topography as a subject of fascination and inspiration for generations of artists. Dietrich chose a particular location, a semicircle of land between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas with the Babelonstoring hill as his focal point, to systematically and artistically document the surrounding landscape. Each panorama, including Horizons of Babel: Anysberg, is constructed from ten overlapping photographs taken in succession that are then translated into aquarelle watercolors and digitally printed. Technology and illustration are important ongoing motifs and Dietrich’s larger project explores the concept of the disembodied panorama. All of Dietrich’s seven watercolors from Horizons of Babel depict specific vantage points that are ultimately disrupted segments, ensuring the totality of the landscape remains elusive and unseen.
