About the Session

Strauss & Co is proud to collaborate with Sanlam Private Wealth Bakusasa Trust and master contemporary ceramicist and co-founder of Imiso Ceramics, Andile Dyalvane, whose one-of-a-kind ceramic artworks will be featured in this session. In keeping with his ethos of camagu (gratitude), all Dyalvane’s work features a signature line that reminds him of his responsibility to leave a footprint for the next generation. The proceeds of the ‘For Generations to Come’ session will go toward supporting the artist’s former school in his home village in Qobo Qobo in the Eastern Cape, Ngobozana Primary School.

Notes

The cermaic piece enacts the deep significance of iCamagu (giving thanks) in Xhosa culture through three vessels and offerings, symbolising essential steps towards reconciliation and personal growth: Umlisela Nomthinjane (literally “young men and women”), a reference to the next generation; Embo (“origin”) and Nyulu (“purifying”).

The proceeds of the present lot will go toward supporting the artist’s former school in his home village in Qobo Qobo in the Eastern Cape, Ngobozana Primary School.
