Often described as the South African equivalent of a Grand Cru or First Growth, Kanonkop Estate is situated on the Simonsberg mountain slopes on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Owned by the fourth generation Krige family, Abri Beeslaar is their long-term winemaker who has won International Winemaker of the year an incredible 3 times.
This internationally acclaimed, long-ageing Bordeaux blend was named after former owner, Paul Sauer, and was first made in 1981.

“First Label” in the Kanonkop red line-up. Deeply, richly, coloured, complex, perfumed, and well-structured tannic red with ageing potential. Do not look for elegance too early. These are masculine wines. Matured mainly in Nevers small barrels, for minimum 14 months, often considerably longer. Sometimes finished in large Yugoslav vats. Composition of blend varieties but generally 60% cabernet sauvignon, 25% cabernet franc, 10% to 15% merlot, with a little melbec and souzao. They are planted together in the same vineyard and harvested, crushed together.' - Platter's SA Guide 1989 - 4.5*
