About this Item
In 1992, the late Giulio Bertrand retired to South Africa from Italy and bought the historic Morgenster farm on the slopes of the Schaapenberg, which dates back to 1711. Specialising in long-ageing Bordeaux-style reds, the director of Cheval Blanc, Pierre Luton, was hired as the consultant.

Critics Ratings
‘The 2009 Proprietary Red is a blend of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot and 14% Cabernet Franc that is aged for 18 months in 60% new oak. It has an attractive nose of fleshy redcurrant, fresh strawberry and raspberry fruit, the oak deftly folded into the aromatic profile and offer sandalwood and cedar notes with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and very Bordeaux-like in style, with tobacco-infused blackberry and strawberry fruit. It is a stately wine, perhaps foursquare compared to its peers, but very well crafted. Drink now-2018+’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Dec 2012)
‘Youthful 2009 flagship shaped by its major cab, merlot partners (also petit verdot, cab franc). Rich in sweet fruit, dense ripe tannins & oak spice, all yet to harmonise. Plenty of time on its side.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2012, 4.5*
