About this Item

2018 Syrah
2 (1 x 2) 1500ml

Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).

The aim with the Syrah is to give true and complete expression to the Shale & Schist and Granite terroirs in which the vines grow.

Critics Ratings

Cool and classy, showing racy dark and red fruits with saline and savoury hints. Fine-grained tannins on the palate. Elegant, lingering finish.’ – Greg Sherwood MW, Decanter.com, 92/100 (Apr 2022)

‘Classic and expressive, the 2018 Syrah is deep ruby in the glass and offers notions of black raspberry, black pepper and cured meats. Medium to full-bodied, the Syrah is focused, balanced and precise, showcasing flavors of summer sausage with plum compote and wild herbs on the mid-palate. The wine continues to evolve, revealing its complexity as it glides to a delightfully lingering finish. Bravo.’ – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Jun 2022)

'Blend of 3 soil types featured in Terroir range, half the barrel time (12 months). 2018 sleek & supple, with sweet red fruit, white pepper spiciness & slight green walnut grip. Elegantly structured for many years cellaring.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2021, 4.5* (94/100)

‘This is a very expressive wine with complex aromatics loaded with grilled herbs, lavender, fresh bresaola, red berries, cherry cola and savoury black berry notes with a tantalising dusting of white pepper. The palate is full, fleshy, layered and impressively textured with a weightless harmonious clarity of savoury red and blue berry fruits, soft mellow acids and light airy tannins that show a fine liquid mineral schisty grip on the finish. A wonderfully supple Syrah expression that throws a spotlight on the impressive winemaking talents of the Mullineuxs. Drink now and over 10 to 15+ years.’ – Greg Sherwood MW, 93+/100 (Apr 2021)

‘The 2018 Syrah contains 90% whole bunch and was matured for 14 months in 15% new oak, used wood and foudre. It has a lively bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, white pepper, clove and cola scents that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. This is quite a sinewy Syrah, grippy in the mouth, revealing hints of licorice and Japanese nori toward the saline finish. Excellent.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100 (Apr 2021)

‘The Mullineux Syrah is one of those textbook wines that are brilliant for teaching purposes as well as for drinking, of course. A Cape take on a Crozes-Hermitage, this comes from seven vineyards on a combination of schist, granite and iron soils and is wonderfully perfumed and intense, with tapenade and violet aromas and a smooth, spicy, blackberry fruity palate. 2021-26’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 93/100
