About this Item

2019 Follow the Line
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

Duncan Savage, a trailblazing winemaker, produces some of SA’s most sought-after wines. They are something of a contradiction; ‘savage’ in their essence of minimal intervention winemaking, but utterly sophisticated in their elegance, drinkability and poise. Every year his following grows, with some of these wines reaching a cult-like status. He sources grapes from across the Western Cape winelands and his cellars are based in Salt River.

Critics Ratings

‘True to form, this wine is ultra perfumed and incredibly pretty with soft seductive aromatics of crushed rose petals, spring cherry blossoms, dried lavender, a melange of red summer berry fruits and an exotic Turkish delight twist. The palate shows a fabulously self assured, compact core of bright red fruits, intense zippy red cherry Kool Aid, candied red berry notes and a super dense yet supple core of purity rarely seen on modest Cinsault. The tannins are fleshy, silky soft and almost imperceptible with the harmonious finesse of the sublime palate texture grabbing all the drinker’s attention. Superbly balanced, subtly piquant and saline, this wine has such a dreamy, creamy finish, breath taking purity of fruit and the most well honed, elegant Grand Cru poise to suggest that this could be one of Duncan’s finest expressions of Cinsault to date. A truly profound wine. Wow! Drink this from release and over the next 10 to 15+ years.’ – Greg Sherwood MW, 96/100 (Aug 2020)

‘Syrah (11%) rejoins cinsaut in 2019, gives extra substance without disturbing light-footed freshness. Layered ripe raspberry, spice, while firm, zesty tannins confirm staying power. Natural ferment & older oak, as all. 50% bunch-pressed, like next 2. Darling grapes.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2021, 5* (95/100)

‘Duncan Savage marries Cinsault with 11% Syrah to produce this engagingly understated red wine, ageing the blend in larger, older barrels. Elegant, refined and well balanced, it has some clove spice from 50% whole bunches, juicy red cherry and pomegranate fruit fine-boned tannins. Classy stuff. 2022-27’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 94/100

‘Immediately impressive in the glass, the 2019 Follow The Line displays impeccable balance with dusty red florals under a red-fruited essence with dried savory herbs and a rocky minerality. Medium-bodied, the wine demonstrates finesse and precision with a dusty red-berried palate with firm tannins and energetic acidity that frames the experience with the high-toned, whole-berry lift, before ending with a pleasingly long finish. Well done! This bottling proves that Cinsault is a serious grape, capable of making age-worthy wines that deliver with crushable pleasure. Run, don't walk to put a few of these bottles into your cellar.’ – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Oct 2021)

‘The 2019 Follow the Line, 89% Cinsault and 11% Syrah made with 50% whole bunch, presents an expressive nose of red currant, raspberry, blackberry, freshly tilled earth, incense and light ferrous scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and very well defined, with a liberal sprinkling of white pepper and clove toward the finish. This is very classy.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Apr 2021)

‘A finely knit red, light- to medium-bodied and fresh, with a salty underpinning to the flavors of white raspberry, rosehip and spiced orange peel. Shows hints of dried herb and minerally iron on the long finish. Drink now.’ – Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Jul 2021)
