About this Item

2012 - 2014 Gigondas Hominis Fides
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

Located in the heart of Gigondas, Saint Cosme is one of the oldest estates in the region with its winemaking dating back to Roman times. The estate has belonged to the Barruol family since 1490 and has passed through 14 generations. They have 15 hectares of old vines with an average age of 60 years and have been practicing organic viticulture since the 1970s. They established a negociant side to the business in 1997 whereby they produce wines from great terroirs and locations outside of Gigondas.

The Hominis Fides vineyard is one of the estate’s top sites. It features very old Grenache vines planted on limestone marl soils, which contribute to the wine's complexity and minerality.

Critics Ratings

2012:
‘The 2012 Gigondas Hominis Fides has fleshed out beautifully since I tasted it from barrel last year. Much more finesse-oriented and elegant now, it boasts stunning crushed rock, dried underbrush, blackberry liqueur, pepper and creosote-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, with ultra-fine tannin, enjoy this rock star effort over the coming 10-15 years.’ – Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Jan 2015)

‘Offers a dense core of black currant, fig and blackberry paste flavors, showing terrific cut and definition. A bright chalky minerality runs underneath, with pepper, charcoal and bay leaf notes on the sleek finish. Best from 2015 through 2028.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 95/100 (Nov 2014)

‘Treacle toffee nose. Racy and with real life. Fully ripe yet with lots of energy and drive. Fine, if at this stage lightly drying, tannins. Well done.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Nov 2013)

2013:
‘Possibly my favorite of the single vineyards (I waffled between this and the Le Poste) is the 2013 Gigondas Hominis Fides. Coming from a vineyard located just down the hill from the estate - in mostly sand and limestone-laced soils - it’s almost 100% Grenache (there’s a small splash of Syrah), and like the classic cuvée, wasn’t destemmed and spent 12 months in older, smaller barrels. Currants, blackberries, licorice and big minerality all emerge from this beautifully pure, full-bodied effort that has a big mid-palate and a serious kick of tannin that emerges on the mid-palate and finish. Give it a year or two and drink it through 2028. It’s unquestionably one of the top wines in the vintage.’ – Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Mar 2016)

‘Shows terrific intensity, with a bolt of raspberry and boysenberry pâte de fruit, framed by mouthwatering licorice root and graphite notes. Loads of sweet spice runs underneath, accented by juniper, black tea and ganache details. Impressive for the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2030.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 96/100 (Nov 2015)

‘Greyish crimson. Intriguing, rather unusual nose. Very sweet with lots of impact on the palate and a salty finish. Appetising. Vigorous relatively early drink.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16/20 (Oct 2014)

2014:
‘The Hominis Fides represents some of the estate's oldest Grenache vines, with an average age of 90 years. Irresistibly ripe, rich and mouthfilling, this is a powerhouse of black-plum and cherry flavors refined by layers of pencil shavings, cedar and spice. It's bold and lavishly textured yet has freshness and a fine, filigreed tannin structure. Drink now through 2030.’ – Anna Lee Iijima, Wine Enthusiast, 94/100 (Mar 2018)

‘Juicy and well-built, with dark sage, savory and tobacco notes weaving around the core of blackberry and black currant fruit, picking up charcoal and roasted alder accents through the finish. The fruit lends this a slightly forward edge, but there's no rush here. Best from 2017 through 2024.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Sep 2016)

‘This smells of burgundy! (And, like most of these St-Cosme special cuvées, turned out to have been aged in used burgundian barrels, and made from Grenache vines planted before 1902. Malolactic fermentation in barrel after a 30-day cuvaison.) If I were tasting this on the Côte de Nuits, I suspect I’d be delighted (though might find it a tad rustic). Opulent fruit and tight, fine-grained oak tannins. Well put together. Promises well.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Nov 2015)
