Critics Ratings
2004:
‘Vivid red. Aromas of dried cherry, potpourri, vanilla and sandalwood, with an exotic touch of allspice building in the glass. Sweet, concentrated and focused, offering cherry compote and rose pastille flavors that put on weight and pick up a smoky nuance on the back half. Shows a deft blend of power and finesse, finishing sweet and gently tannic, with excellent persistence and an echo of candied flowers.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100 (Oct 2015)
‘Very fruity and intense yet there's a finesse and subtlety. Full-bodied and rich but very polished and refined. Lots of dried fruit, earth and spice. Aged five to six years in old American oak casks. Drink or hold.’ – James Suckling, 94/100 (Jun 2015)
‘Dark ruby-colored, with notes of beef blood, iron, antique shop, incense, blood orange and a touch of volatile acidity, the palate is very fresh, with good concentration, clear flavors and enough grip and fruit to age gracefully. A perfumed and feminine great Rioja.’ - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Dec 2013)
2009:
‘Very ripe still, with crushed berry and light jam. Vanilla undertones to the fruit. Turns to flowers, both fresh and dried. Complex cedar, tobacco and walnut. It’s full-bodied with round, soft tannins and a flavorful finish. Richer than past vintages, but turns linear and refined at the finish. Drink now.’ – James Suckling, 96/100 (Sep 2020)
‘The 2009 Viña Bosconia Reserva shows the ripeness of the very warm and dry year. It's structured and concentrated, quite different from the finesse of the Tondonia. Bosconia has always been more rustic and powerful and Tondonia all about finesse and nuance. There are dark plums and baking spices, a touch of singed leather, the fruit very strong to counterbalance the aging in barrel. This is a powerful Bosconia.’ - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Oct 2020)
