About this Item

2004 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is a Rioja producer that is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest wine estates. It was founded in 1877 and is well known for its traditional winemaking approach. It is particularly associated with its Tempranillo-based wines from the Tondonia vineyard to the extent that this now forms part of the company name. The late-release wines have long barrel ageing and can age extremely well including the whites which are highly sort-after.

Critics Ratings

‘Pale gold. Complex with oxidative aromas that are cedary and almost resinous. Chewy, wild and bone dry but somehow has the flavour of sour apricots and rosemary and all sorts of seemingly conflicting characteristics that make a wonderful whole. A firm grip that is somehow tannic but not astringent. Very long and fresh. Released this year. Perfect in this style. Will probably go on for ever.’ – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Jun 2017)

‘This distinctive white shows its age in the deep gold color, but still has life and structure. Hazelnut, vanilla and lanolin flavors frame a core of dried apple and coconut notes, while keen acidity and light tannins keep this focused. Dense, complex and harmonious. Drink now through 2024.’ – Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 95/100 (Dec 2017)

‘Only recently released, and it's terrific value at 13 years old. Impressively fresh; Lopez de Heredia have the recipe for the elixir of life. Fermented in venerable vats over 100 years old, and aged for six years in oak, there's exceptional refinement. It's an original: penetrating, intense, developed, and softened by almonds and honey.’ – Sarah Jane Evans MW, Decanter.com, 95/100 (Apr 2017)

‘The nose seems less developed than in the 2007 Gravonia, younger and livelier. Even after six years in oak, the wine is not oaky, but the aromas are subtle and even a little shy. The palate is austere and it feels a little stiff, with lively acidity and pungent flavors. This feels like a superb year for this bottling, it's clear that it's a great vintage.’ - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Aug 2016)
