About this Item

1999, 2003 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is a Rioja producer that is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest wine estates. It was founded in 1877 and is well known for its traditional winemaking approach. It is particularly associated with its Tempranillo-based wines from the Tondonia vineyard to the extent that this now forms part of the company name. The late-release wines have long barrel ageing and can age extremely well including the whites which are highly sort-after.

Critics Ratings

1999:
‘Gold. Gorgeous richness and waxy lanolin development. Very sumptuous and recalls the great fat Murrieta whites of yesteryear. It eventually faded in the glass to be overtaken by the more reticent 1991 white.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Apr 2018)

‘It has a bright yellow color and a serious nose full of old waxed furniture, incense, pollen, dried flowers, mushrooms and a chalky, mineral note. The palate has intense, almost pungent flavors, great complexity and balance. It shows incredibly young for its age. A unique white Rioja and a unique white wine. Drink now-2020.’ - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Dec 2013)

2003:
‘Light bright yellow-gold. Dried citrus and pit fruits, white flowers, vanilla and a hint of beeswax on the highly perfumed nose. Concentrated but nervy as well, offering orange and pear nectar and toasted nut flavors; a gingery quality adds spiciness and lift. The floral note repeats emphatically on the impressively long, incisive finish, which features notes of chamomile and candied orange zest.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100 (Apr 2017)

‘This distinctive white is delicate yet expressive, with a lean texture carrying lively flavors of dried apple, quince, wildflower, tarragon and vanilla. Fresh acidity carries herbal and floral notes through the long finish. Drink now through 2023.’ – Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Sep 2016)

‘Opulent nose showing ripe yellow apples and acacia with buttery and nutty undertones. Full-bodied and round. Lively finish. Waxy and very much a white Rioja.’ – James Suckling, 92/100 (Dec 2016)
