Critics Ratings
‘Right away, this comes across as a wine that's on the money. Pure concentrated aromas of blackberry, licorice and lemony oak introduce an intense palate with baked blackberry and cassis flavors. A toasty dark spicy finish exhibits notes of coffee and bitter chocolate as it slowly fades away. Drink through 2025.’ — Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast, 94/100 (Feb 2016)
‘Deep ruby with a bright rim. Explosive, seductively perfumed aromas of dark berry compote, floral oils and vanilla, along with hints of mocha, licorice and woodsmoke. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering intense blackberry and violet pastille flavors and a touch of allspice. Distinctly rich yet lively as well, finishing with strong thrust, well-integrated tannins and superb spice-driven persistence. Seventy percent new French oak barriques were used for this wine, which is a joint project of the famed Vega Sicilia bodega in Ribera del Duero and Benjamin de Rothschild, of that family in Bordeaux that some may have heard of.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 94/100 (Oct 2015)
‘In its second vintage, the Grand Vin 2010 Macan has a very Rioja profile, subtle aromas of forest floor, spices, blackberries (in fact a mixture of red and black fruit) and a lactic touch with smoky undertones plus hints of leather and ink. The palate shows good depth and is clean, focused, structured and balanced. Some earthy hints, somehow mineral, show through on this modern Rioja showing classical proportions: a clean, finely crafted Rioja.’ - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 93+/100 (Apr 2015)
‘This chewy red shows concentration in a savory style. Smoky, tarry and licorice notes shadow a core of plum and tobacco flavors. Dense and rather austere, though floral and vanilla details emerge on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2030.’ - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Sep 2015)
