Notes

Irma Stern's time in Zanzibar, initially sparked by a desire for diversion during wartime, evolved into a golden age of creativity and cultural immersion. Her extended stays in 1939 and later in 1945 not only inspired a prolific output of paintings, gouaches, and drawings but also resulted in her seminal book, Zanzibar, published in 1948. This period of intense productivity and artistic exploration marked a highlight in Stern's career, solidifying her reputation as a masterful interpreter of exotic landscapes and cultural traditions. Among Stern's numerous studies of wedding dancers from the region, this work distinguishes itself by including a musician playing the Ney flute, an ancient Persian instrument. This addition both enriches the scene with auditory depth and illustrates Stern's meticulous attention to capturing the full sensory experience of the celebration. Framing the piece are colorful raffia mats sourced from local prayer rugs, possibly to enhance its exotic appeal on exhibition. This thoughtful integration of local materials reflects Stern's deep appreciation for Zanzibar's aesthetic richness.
