Cape Heritage - Red Wines
About the SessionThe Cape Heritage Red Wine Session features 25 lots from The Tabernacle – the famous underground cellar in Stellenbosch that houses some of South Africa’s most spectacular vinous historical treasures. All the lots from The Tabernacle have been recorked; each bottle was opened for inspection, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, and Strauss & Co fine wine specialist Higgo Jacobs along with Amorim tasted and assessed each wine. The wines were topped up with wine from the same vintage, recorked and resealed, all under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks.

About this Item
Nederburg is considered by many to be South Africa’s most decorated name in wine and their achievements and accolades can match up to any other estate in the nation. Established in 1791 by Philippus Wolvaart and his wife, Margaretha, they laid the foundations for future success on a farm situated between the Berg and Palmiet rivers. Amongst their many accolades, highlights include Platter’s guide awarding them winery of the year in 2011 and 2017 and placing 36th in the ‘most admired wine brand in the world’ by the esteemed Drinks International in 2017.
The Nederburg Private Bin R range of wines were specially made and bottled for the Nederburg Auction. The R163 refers to the Cabernet Sauvignon clone 163.

Critics Ratings
'Excellent deep red colour, very tiny touch of onion skin colour on the edge. Rich aromas jump from the glass, red fruit with a hint of cassis, with some typical Nederburg sweetness and spice in the background. The palate is an amazing combination of the same red fruit, sweetness, spice and lovely acidity. Very smooth on the palate, youthful, lingering and delicious. A remarkable wine to enjoy now, but with well-balanced acidity to let this wine still mature for many more years.' - Bennie Howard CWM (Mar 2024)
'Quite ambitious for the era, with firm, ripe fruit and even notes of oak. Well broadened by earthy, leafy notes with only a hint of tertiary character from bottle age showing in tobacco, vintage port and leather. Lovely sweetness in the tail.' - Higgo Jacobs (2024)
‘Red fruit, spearmint, some leafiness, earth and chocolate on the nose. The palate is light-bodied – a good core of fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins, the finish very dry. A modest yet appealing wine that’s drinking well.’ - Christian Eedes, 91/100 (Apr 2022)
