Cape Heritage - Red Wines
About the SessionThe Cape Heritage Red Wine Session features 25 lots from The Tabernacle – the famous underground cellar in Stellenbosch that houses some of South Africa’s most spectacular vinous historical treasures. All the lots from The Tabernacle have been recorked; each bottle was opened for inspection, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, and Strauss & Co fine wine specialist Higgo Jacobs along with Amorim tasted and assessed each wine. The wines were topped up with wine from the same vintage, recorked and resealed, all under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks.

About this Item
Nederburg is considered by many to be South Africa’s most decorated name in wine and their achievements and accolades can match up to any other estate in the nation. Established in 1791 by Philippus Wolvaart and his wife, Margaretha, they laid the foundations for future success on a farm situated between the Berg and Palmiet rivers. Amongst their many accolades, highlights include Platter’s guide awarding them winery of the year in 2011 and 2017 and placing 36th in the ‘most admired wine brand in the world’ by the esteemed Drinks International in 2017.
The Nederburg Private Bin R range of wines were specially made and bottled for the Nederburg Auction. The R103 refers to Bin 103 in the cellar where the unlabelled wines were stored.
This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz (about 75/25%) has been one of the trademarks of Nederburg red wines under the guidance of maestro Günter Brözel, Nederburg’s famous cellar master. Nederburg often used some Shiraz in its Cabernet wines in the 1960’s, like most wineries did. The R103 was launched at the inaugural Nederburg Auction in 1975 as a fully-fledged blend and became a sought-after wine.
This wine has been checked and re-corked by Amorim cork under supervision of auction curator Higgo Jacobs, assuring provenance, quality and long life. Seal codes qt-261301, wA-380595, dD-547457, YY-001633 can be traced on Amorim Recorking Directory
Critics Ratings
'Beautiful deep red colour, just a hint of brown edge. A variety of flavours greet you on the nose – red fruit, some chocolate and a touch of toffee rounded off by some spice. The wine is rich and elegant displaying its youthfulness through beautiful red fruit then more of the chocolate and spice coming through on the palate, smooth and delicious. The acidity is well balanced in this delightful wine promising that it will further mature for a number of years more.' - Bennie Howard CWM (Mar 2024)
'Lovely Kirsch, plums and prunes on a perfumed, mostly fruit driven nose, with very little savoury elements. Fully mature, but stable and moreish palate shows red fruit liqueur and milk chocolate. Deliciously unique.' - Higgo Jacobs (2024)
