Cape Heritage - Red Wines
About the SessionThe Cape Heritage Red Wine Session features 25 lots from The Tabernacle – the famous underground cellar in Stellenbosch that houses some of South Africa’s most spectacular vinous historical treasures. All the lots from The Tabernacle have been recorked; each bottle was opened for inspection, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, and Strauss & Co fine wine specialist Higgo Jacobs along with Amorim tasted and assessed each wine. The wines were topped up with wine from the same vintage, recorked and resealed, all under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks.

About this Item
Everything Overgaauw is true to their roots. Heritage is not just a concept; it is a soil, roots and fruit reality lived out daily on the century-old estate. The first Van Velden to make wine at Overgaauw was Abraham, who founded the farm in 1905 and built his wine cellar four years later. He laid a foundation far bigger than a wine business – his would be a legacy of pioneering spirit, respect for the land and a passion for excellence. It was a vision so full of heart that it passed as naturally as DNA from one Van Velden generation to the next, with the result that over 100 years later, Overgaauw can make the extraordinary claim of being a fourth-generation family wine farm.
This wine has been checked and re-corked by Amorim cork under supervision of auction curator Higgo Jacobs, assuring provenance, quality and long life. Seal code Np-462674, uM-566216, PL-386477 can be traced on Amorim Recorking Directory

Critics Ratings
'Another splendid example of the 1974 vintage. Lovely deep red colour, extremely beautiful for a 50-year-old wine. And just a touch of brown edge. A powerful nose with lots of red fruit, cedarwood spice and touch of mint and eucalyptus. Wonderful ripe red fruit flavours, some cassis sweetness coming through followed by the cedarwood and nuttiness to complete the flavour profile. Smooth, long and lingering aftertaste, still showing some freshness – a marvellous expression of an old Cabernet Sauvignon.' - Bennie Howard CWM (Mar 2024)
‘Rather advanced aromas and flavours – this wine shows a particular medicinal character with notes of caramel, herbs, spice and earth. The palate, however, has great weight and texture, being rich and broad with mellow tannins.’ - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 91/100 (Apr 2022)
'Gorgeous. Elegant, classic, fine and fresh. Camphor, leather, tea leaf and fudgy red fruit. Fully mature, yet stable. Stunning wine - one of the finest from this producer.' - Higgo Jacobs (2024)
