Cape Heritage - Red Wines
About the Session

The Cape Heritage Red Wine Session features 25 lots from The Tabernacle – the famous underground cellar in Stellenbosch that houses some of South Africa’s most spectacular vinous historical treasures. All the lots from The Tabernacle have been recorked; each bottle was opened for inspection, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, and Strauss & Co fine wine specialist Higgo Jacobs along with Amorim tasted and assessed each wine. The wines were topped up with wine from the same vintage, recorked and resealed, all under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks.

About this Item

1974 Stellenbosch Cinsaut
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery was the brainchild of William Charles Winshaw, an American medical doctor who came to South Africa in 1900 at the time of the Anglo Boer War. In 1925, SFW was created with Winshaw remaining as the MD of the organisation until 1962 when, at the age of 92, he retired. SFW, as the name implies, excelled at producing quality wines for the full spectrum of consumer needs. This company was also instrumental in the creation of a major new segment in our alcoholic beverage industry - ciders or alcoholic fruit beverages as we know them. One of the company's key strengths has always been innovation.

This wine has been checked and re-corked by Amorim cork under supervision of auction curator Higgo Jacobs, assuring provenance, quality and long life. Seal code Os-069683, ly-613940 can be traced on Amorim Recorking Directory

Critics Ratings

'This wine from Stellenbosch Farmers Winery, was a special release to celebrate the introduction of the Wine of Origin scheme on 1 September 1973. The wine has a lighter red to onion skin colour, still bright and clear. Typical of Cinsaut, the colour has changed from red to this more brownish colour. Toffee and coffee flavours are dominant on the nose followed by some sweet rich dried fruit flavours. There is no sign of oxidation on the nose or palate, just the sweet Cinsaut fruit upfront on the nose and palate. The wine is still showing some freshness, which is amazing for a 50-year-old Cinsaut. Smooth and soft on the palate.' - Bennie Howard CWM (Mar 2024)

‘Made in the days when pure Cinsaults were much rarer than they are today, this is a mature, brick red example that’s reminiscent of an aged red Burgundy from Volnay or Chambolle-Musigny. Subtle, ethereal and balsamic with notes of forest floor, rooibos tea and wild strawberry and delicate, palate-caressing tannins.’ - Tim Atkin MW, 93/100 (Apr 2022)

'Macerated strawberries, earth and spice on the nose while the palate shows sweet fruit and soft tannins. True to the variety, this retains a certain charm.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za (Apr 2022)

‘Dense, dark supremely richly fruited and elegant. Beautiful perfumed, red berry fruit lift. Intense…Sooo sweet, rich and unctuously opulent. Low acid feel, plush creamy palate and a real blockbuster feel. But this is classic, ripe 1974. Crazy plummy concentration, plushness, freshness and exotic depth. Still so youthful.’ - Greg Sherwood MW, A Fine Wine Safari, 93/100 (Apr 2017)
