About this Item

2016 Rooidraai Chenin Blanc
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Growing wine is the main focus of cousins Danie and Hugo Carinus and when you factor in their close relationship with Lukas Van Loggerenberg, South Africa’s ‘Rockstar winemaker’, you get something absolutely delicious. Danie and Hugo grow their grapes in Devon Valley, Polkadraai and Swartland and supply some of the leading wine producers with these sought-after grapes. They are 5th generation wine growers, and also Wine Cellar Young Guns™.

Winemakers personal tasting note:
'On the nose-Peach blossom, apple and a hint of fynbos. The palate is focussed and precise. It has a honeymoon tension-nervous at first but shows a stately confidence as things progress. The 2016 vintage delivers pure Chenin Fruit with precision. Sharp, yet beautifully balanced acidity with a long finish.' - Danie Carinus

'One of the most important wines of the year' - Cyril Ramaphosa SONA 2018*

Critics Ratings

'Off dryland old vines on the Swartland farm whose name it uses (the red of its soil repeated on the name on the label). Freshness & finesse on 2016, clean & penetrating, rounded & textured by older oak; long-lingering, supple finish. Not about fruitiness, but balance & harmony; saline & dry.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2018, 5* (95/100)

'Lukas van Loggerenberg is the winemaker of this impressive Chenin Blanc, sourced from red clay soils. Low in alcohol for a 2016 Swartland white, it’s further proof of his affinity with the grape: taut, chiselled and focused with long, stony, mouth-watering finish. 2018-24' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 92/100

'On the nose, there’s again peach and apple but now also more elusive notes of potpourri and dried herbs. The palate meanwhile is simultaneously more intense and tighter – extraordinary fruit purity and fantastically long on the finish. Only 700 bottles made.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100
