About this Item

2016 The 1947 Chenin Blanc
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Kaapzicht is a 4th generation family-owned wine estate, located in Stellenbosch. The name Kaapzicht means ‘Cape view’ and is attributed to the beautiful views of Table Mountain and Cape Town which are seen from the farm. The Steytler family has farmed the land since 1946 and today, brothers Danie and George own the 190-hectare estate. Located on the Bottelary hill, the farm experiences a mild climate with cool sea breezes and consists of old, weathered granite soils.

Having been under the Steytler family’s care for 3 generations, Kaapzicht is a hallmark of the Bottelary Hills, producing wine since 1984. Danie Steytler Jnr took over the reins from father Danie in 2009, and with the emphatic introduction of this single vineyard Chenin in 2013, earning a Platter 5* on release, cemented his intentions to build on the family brand and grow the quality offering. Named 1947 after the planting date of the vineyard (planted by Danie’s great grandfather), thought to be SA’s 2nd oldest block of Chenin, the wine was introduced to mark 30 years of bottling under the Kaapzicht label. Super small production and sold out on release, the older vintages are rare finds.

Such is the modesty of the Steytlers that not much was made of this 2016 vintage being named Decanter Magazine's most exciting wine of 2017 under £55 - worldwide - this is no mean feat!

Critics Ratings

'Quince, citrus zest & cream tones of 2016 continue rich vein of form. Low-key winemaking: bunch pressing, natural ferment of fruit off SA’s 2nd oldest chenin vines. Broad, intense yet fresh & supple. Complex oaking: new/old, French/Hungarian, small to large format. 2015 (4.5 stars, 93 pts) also a great future.' - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2018, 5* (95/100)

'Luxurious, warm and enveloping notes of honey, lemon and pineapple jump out of the glass. Creamy and complex, this is bursting with flavour, life and indulgent good humour. Sweet exotic fruit, married with nutty apple and citrus, are wrapped up with a crisp acidity. Drinking Window 2017 - 2023' - Decanter's Most Exciting Wines of 2017 Panel Tasting, 96 Points

'Right up there with the best Cape Chenins in 2016, this is a thing of beauty and stunning complexity. Danie Steytler’s touch is very gentle here, producing a magical combination of old vine fruit, minerality, lees and subtle oak. Racy and focused, with tangerine, pear tart and sweet spices. 2018-26' - Tim Atkin SA Wine Report 2017, 96/100

'69-year-old vines. Rich and well textured. Good acidity plus round, satin texture. Great stuff! Lime and blossom. Really deep flavoured and thirst quenching.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jun 2017)
