About this Item
Patatsfontein is a winemaking venture formed by Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, fund manager Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon – ‘Master’ baker of Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. He's possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic! Their 2014 Steen was Tim Atkin's White Wine Discovery of the Year and changed the status quo of what can be achieved in a region essentially known for sweet Muscadel.
This unique wine is made from an old single vineyard situated 600m above sea level in the Montagu mountains planted on Karoo slate and shale. Today it is one of South Africa’s greatest Chenin Blancs.

Critics Ratings
'It has a most precise, piercing nose of stoney yellow fruits, bruised yellow peaches, saline briney white citrus, pithy tangerine peel and all the hallmark Patatsfontein aromatics of waxy yellow apples, potpourri and exotic curry leaf incense notes. Very seductive, alluring, confident wine. The palate is even more concentrated and structured than the 2015, no easy feat in itself, proving yet again what great pedigree this wine has. The finish shows great energy, fine purity, and impressive, creamy textural length. It seems young Reenen Borman can do no wrong. Congratulations. Drink now to 2030+.' - Greg Sherwood MW, 96/100 (Aug 2017)
'Single-vineyard chenin from Montagu. Similar winemaking to sublime 2015 (5 stars, 95 pts), more Old World than New, 2016 a complex interweaving of perfume & flavours. Almond-savoury, yet floral notes, stonefruit, even minerality. Lithe & polished.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2018, 4.5* (92/100)
'So good (and consistent) is this wine that it’s easy to forget that this is only the third vintage of Reenen Borman’s delicious Chenin from isolated Montagu. Leesy, complex and focused, with citrus and pear fruit, some orange zest, subtle oak and a salty, tangy mineral core. 2018-23' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 95/100
'The bouquet of this interesting, supertextural wine leads with notes of white peach and peach pit, yellow melon and grilled apple. Supporting tones of ginger root, fresh hay and savory fresh herbs add depth from the background. Ripe yet pithy melon and orange flavors carry through to the close and lend a lasting textural impression to the palate. Ample acidity supports the package, just picking up the density of the flavors and textural weight. A lightly toasty, nutty almond and melon flavor resides on the close.' - Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast (Mar 2019)
