Cape Heritage - Red Wines
About the SessionThe Cape Heritage Red Wine Session features 25 lots from The Tabernacle – the famous underground cellar in Stellenbosch that houses some of South Africa’s most spectacular vinous historical treasures. All the lots from The Tabernacle have been recorked; each bottle was opened for inspection, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, and Strauss & Co fine wine specialist Higgo Jacobs along with Amorim tasted and assessed each wine. The wines were topped up with wine from the same vintage, recorked and resealed, all under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks.

About this Item
Chris and Suzanne Alheit set the wine world on fire with their maiden 2011 Cartology receiving 96 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Aiming to harness the best old vineyards across the Cape, the Cartology offered a textured old-vine Chenin Blanc Semillon blend with startling purity and depth. Passionate and focused on the expression of place, tiny, long-forgotten parcels were added to the range, and are today South Africa’s most profound white wines. We auction maiden vintages of Magnetic Makstok on the legendary ‘Skurfkop’ in the Citrusdal area, Huilkrans in the Paardeberg, La Colline in Franschhoek, and, extremely rare Radio Lazarus in Stellenbosch.

Critics Ratings
‘“Made in remembrance of mid-century Cape reds” reads the label of Wine Dark Sea 2017 from Alheit Vineyards, this being a once-off effort from the generally white wine-focused Chris and Suzaan Alheit. Consisting of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cinsault and 21% Syrah from Stellenbosch vineyards, winemaking involved spontaneous fermentation and maturation in old oak. The nose shows red fruit, potpourri, dried herbs and white pepper while the palate is light, fresh and very savoury. It has a nice vinosity about it and moves really well – some will perhaps find it hollow and want more grunt (alcohol is 13%) but I really like it.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100 (Aug 2020)
