Cape Heritage - Red Wines
About the SessionThe Cape Heritage Red Wine Session features 25 lots from The Tabernacle – the famous underground cellar in Stellenbosch that houses some of South Africa’s most spectacular vinous historical treasures. All the lots from The Tabernacle have been recorked; each bottle was opened for inspection, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, and Strauss & Co fine wine specialist Higgo Jacobs along with Amorim tasted and assessed each wine. The wines were topped up with wine from the same vintage, recorked and resealed, all under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks.
About this Item
3-time IWSC World Winemaker of the Year winner, and winemaker of iconic Kanonkop Estate, Abrie Beeslaar’s own label shot to early fame as one of the finest modern Pinotages to come out of the Cape. Abrie believes that ‘if you are lucky enough to have the right terroir and put in the effort that Pinotage deserves, there is no wine more rewarding’.
This single vineyard Pinotage is a true testament of that. The 2014 is only the 3rd vintage since release and scored a whopping 96 points from Tim Atkin, who described it as 'smooth, subtle and beautifully refined, with notes of blueberry and raspberry, fine tannins and a polished finish.’

'Great purity & restraint in 2014. Although it repeats 2013’s cherry, raspberry features, pinot noir’s elegance, this is sterner & more linear, requiring patience. Lively grape tannins & oak spice provide energy, tempering effect of 14.5% alcohol. French & American oak, 50% new, 18 months.' - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2017, 5*
'Dark, bright ruby-red. Very ripe, almost chocolatey aromas of raspberry and dark cherry, with some oak showing. Creamy-rich and sweet but with lovely harmonious acidity. Broad, fine-grained, rather powerful wine with terrific density of berry fruits and spices and a restrained sweetness. This plush, fine-grained wine has 3-D depth. Finishes with broad, sweet but substantial tannins to support a slow evolution in bottle. Builds nicely on the end, retaining its sweetness and avoiding dryness. A wonderfully fruity, clean, substantial Pinotage with a lot of early sex appeal.' - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 93/100 (Mar 2017)
'Lushly layered, with notes of boysenberry, blueberry and blackberry preserves gliding through, carried by a polished structure and backed by mocha and dark licorice notes. Unfurls steadily through the lengthy finish. A lovely display of fruit. Drink now through 2021.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Sep 2016)
