About this Item
The family-run Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy's oldest and most revered domaines. They own many Grand Cru plots in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as part of the highly sought-after Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard. Established in the early 20th Century by Armand Rousseau, the domaine initially owned small parcels throughout Gevrey-Chambertin. Over the next century, under both Armand Rousseau and his son Charles, who took over the reins in 1959, the domaine acquired various Grand Cru vineyards in Charmes, Mazis and Mazoyères-Chambertin, culminating in a plot in Le Chambertin itself in 1994. Careful winemaking, which allows for terroir-expression, the sparing use of oak and old vines, all make for elegant and pure wines that are built for long ageing.
The 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is a remarkable wine from one of Burgundy's most revered producers and one of the finest premier cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin. The 2002 vintage, in particular, is highly regarded for its balance and elegance, making this wine a standout expression of both the vineyard and the vintage.

Critics Ratings
‘The 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is just a tiny bit smudged on the nose, but it rectifies that with aeration, offering disarming brambly red fruit, bergamot and potpourri scents, just a slight ferrous tincture in the background. The palate is fine-boned with pure red fruit, structured and slightly disjointed initially. Yet it coheres magnificently in the glass, so smooth. I was shocked when the vintage was revealed because this bottle suggests a very slow evolution. Wonderful.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 95/100 (Dec 2022)
‘The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques 2002 from Rousseau is just a sublime expression of the vineyard and the style of the domaine. The bouquet offers startling delineation with red cherries, crushed strawberry, wet limestone and rose petals. The palate is elegant and refined in keeping with the more understated style of the vintage, the acidity finely tuned and with a gradual crescendo of red berry and mineral notes that fan out in consummate fashion on the finish. It's just a beautiful wine that is now at a beautiful stage of its life. Irresistible!’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Apr 2015)
‘Mid crimson. Some mossiness on the nose with definite tertiary development. Bold and fine and confident without so much plump fruit – a little hard in fact. Not as exciting at first as I would have expected given the reputation of vintage and producer but it evolved in the glass. Pretty tough on the finish. Needs lots of time. It’s going to get there and is only just starting to show its class.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Sep 2007)
