About this Item

2001 Romanée-Saint-Vivant
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of the most enigmatic names in the wine world, conjuring up notions of exclusivity and desirability. It is the only Burgundy wine producer with a status comparable to the top Bordeaux producers. Its prestige, and historical links with royalty, has made it the foremost name in Burgundy, a region which has been experiencing significantly increased demand over recent years, becoming a priority for international collectors.

One of the most renowned vineyards in the world, located in the commune of Vosne-Romanée. The wines of incredible Grand cru sites of Échézeaux, Grands Échézeaux, La Tâche, Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, are praised for their subtle and mysterious nature.

Guided by the relentless pursuit of excellence, passed down from generation to generation, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s mission is to make its Grands Crus the greatest in all of Burgundy. Few would dispute that the wines of DRC are some of the world’s finest.

Provenance

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains an expansive collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via refrigerated container. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.

Critics Ratings

'The 2001 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has quite a deep hue. Intense dark berry on the nose, hints of orange rind and even a faint melted tar scent. This is a surprising showing for the normally transparent Romanée-Saint-Vivent - this is opaque and surly, yet the tannins are finely hewn. Backward in style, as I commented before, it is doing a delicious impersonation of a Richebourgh! I would afford this more time in bottle.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100 (Sep 2022)

'One of the darkest and most impressive of the DRC 2001s. Mid ruby with some evolution. Serious, dense, intriguing nose – dry rather than sweet. Really quite powerful. Heady and now we enter into the magic kingdom of DRC! Very luscious and with some greenness still but with great fruit. Freshness and density. Dancing. The ripest and most complete. Broad, this wine spreads across the palate. Real sweetness, with delicacy. Long. Great life to this.' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Dec 2011)

'A similar colour to the Echezeaux. A typical floral nose at first but then it changed in the glass becoming more meaty, broody and masculine. This was reflected on the palate with well-integrated tannins, quite minerally with a touch of white pepper. A sturdy, rigid wine, more structured than usual. Certainly better than Richebourg this year. 8 - 12 years.' - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90-92/100 (Feb 2004)
