About this Item
Hospices de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse founded in 1443 in the town of Beaune. It is now a modern hospital, with the original buildings serving as a museum. Since 1859, a charity wine auction has raised funds for the hospital with the wines produced being released under the Hospice's umbrella label. The auction features multiple barrels of 45 cuvées, blended from sites spanning 60ha, principally in the Côte de Beaune, the majority premier and grand cru.
The Hospices de Beaune at the Hôtel-Dieu was founded in 1443 and is regarded as the world’s first modern hospital. Today, the iconic Burgundian building bears name to the important charity wine auction held in November each year. The auction offers unique parcels of enchanting Burgundies and also provides an indication of global fine wine prices.
These wines were bought by Paul Bouchard at the Hospices de Beaune auction, on behalf of Bouchard Finlayson, Hermanus, in 1996 and 2001 respectively.
Hospices de Beaune Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Rousseau-Deslandes 2001:
Made up of 3 parcels of vineyards. Les Cent Vignes with the majority of its vines dating between 1944 and 1958 is at the heart of this Cuvée (60% of the plantings). Close to Pommard, Les Montrevenots represents the balance of the Cuvée, with all its vines planted prior to 1966.Also Les Mignottes.
Hospices de Beaune Pommard Cuvée Billardet 1996:
This Cuvée honours 2 eminent doctors at the Hospices: Antoine Billardet who worked through the Revolution, and his son Charles, a student-surgeon in Bonaparte’s army, who devoted 50 years of his life to the sick of Beaune. This is one of the most highly regarded Pommard cuvées in the estate. 87% of the vineyards were planted in 1988 or before, going back to 1960 and 1954. 35% of the Cuvée comes from Premier Cru les Arvelets (average vine age: more than 25 years).

Hospices de Beaune Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Rousseau-Deslandes 2001
'A spell-binding wine from a good vintage that offers magically pure fruit and savoury intrigue. Classic Burgundy with perfumed red berries, forest floor and truffles. Freshly elegant and still showing some tannin, it will drink well for another decade. Drink to 2028.' – Roland Peens (Apr 2018)
Hospices de Beaune, Pommard Cuvée Billardet 1996
'1996 was a superb vintage, with great structure and acidity, and the Pommard is in an amazing sweet spot. Dark fruits, roast meats, floral and earthy notes display an incredible complexity and depth. A lovely line of acidity carries red berry fruit and fine length. Just sumptuous. Drink now to 2022.' – Roland Peens (Apr 2018)
