About this Item

1998 Cabernet Sauvignon
1 (1 x 1) 1500ml

Philip Togni Vineyard is a small, family-owned Napa Valley wine producer, focused on producing high-quality wine from Cabernet Sauvignon. It is one of the oldest producers of the Spring Mountain District AVA (American Viticultural Area). The Philip Togni Vineyard was planted in 1981 by Philip Togni with his wife Birgitta, on an ideal 4 hectare plot, 600 meters above sea level. Today, Philip Togni is remarkably a self-contained producer, with all vinification taking place on site.

This flagship wine of the estate is a Bordeaux-style blend, predominantly made from Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. It is known for its depth, complexity, and long aging potential. The wines are typically released several years after harvest, reflecting Togni’s belief that they benefit from extended bottle aging.

The Philip Togni Vineyard is situated at an elevation of approximately 600 metres on Spring Mountain, a region known for its rugged terrain and diverse microclimates. The vineyard’s location contributes to the unique character of Togni’s wines, which are known for their balance of power and elegance.

Critics Ratings

'The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, a wine from a much maligned vintage, has aged impeccably. Cedar, tobacco, dried herbs and crushed flowers all grace this exquisite, harmonious Cabernet Sauvignon. Today the 1998 is in a perfect place, with plenty of tertiary character. I wouldn't push my luck on aging the 1998 too much longer, but readers who enjoy mature Cabernets will find much to admire. In this very cool vintage, Togni thinned heavily. Harvest wrapped up on November 2, very late relative to the norm here.' - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91/100 (Oct 2018)

'Although 1998 was a challenging vintage in California, this 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has evolved into a beautiful wine. If you want to throw a California Cabernet into a blind tasting of first and second-growth Bordeaux, this is the wine to choose. A dead-ringer for a top-class Pauillac, it offers leafy, cedary, licorice, red and black currant, and roasted herb aromas. In the mouth, the Bordeaux-like austerity continues with noticeable tannin as well as a slightly dry finish. Nevertheless, this wine is showing well, although I would not hold it longer than 5-6 years, atypical for a Togni.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Dec 2008)
