Critics Ratings
‘The 2014 flagship prestige cuvée is the pinnacle of quality, made from 100% chardonnay. Beautifully fine dry mousse & broad, mouthfilling toasty palate from 5 years on the lees (no oaking of base wine), with nutty hints & a lively freshness. Ageworthy. No 2013.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (94/100)
‘Like the 2012 release - there was no 2013 - the latest release of Cuvée Clive is a Blanc de Blancs, made with Chardonnay from (mostly) Robertson and Darling. It's the latest in a series of stunning bubblies, with 100% barrel fermentation of the base wine, a toasty, tangy palate, some brioche and cashew and a combination of restraint and understated power. 2019-29’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 96/100
‘The Cuvée Clive is the top-of-the-range bottling from Méthode Cap Classique specialists Graham Beck made with Chardonnay from mostly Robertson as well as Darling, the base juice undergoing 100% barrel fermentation. The newly available 2014 has a complex nose, the first impression being a hint of reduction before opening up to reveal blossom, green apple, lemon, orange, fresh white bread and a little spice. The palate is particularly rich and flavourful with bright acidity and a creamy mousse, the finish having a slightly saline quality.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100 (Sep 2019)
‘The 2014 Cuvee Clive has a fresh and lively expression that evolves in the glass, with fresh apples, toasty brioche and a nutty and yeasty tone. The wine has a focused structure on the palate, with a balanced, crisp and mineral mid-palate. It should develop into nuttier, complex flavors with age in the coming years. Granny Smith apples, spiced pears in lemon curd and a soft mineral and mushroomy expression linger on this acid-driven finish. I am curious to revisit this 2014 bottling on my next trip to South Africa.’ – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate (Oct 2019)
