About this Item
Since 2013, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have been working on a new project that focuses on vineyards outside of the Swartland appellation which have been specially selected by Rosa Kruger. Together with their partner Analijt Singh they launched their game changing Leeu Passant wines. Produced from old vines, including the oldest registered red wine vineyard in South Africa, these wines redefine the South African wine landscape. Their inspiration comes from past successes of the 50s, 60s and 70s, like Chateau Libertas and Rustenberg Dry Red. Their wines speak of South Africa’s heritage and bring the unique wines of the past into the future.
This lot consists of the following wines:
Leeu Passant Elandskloof Chardonnay 2015 (1 x 750ml)
Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2017 (2 x 750ml)
Elandskloof Chardonnay: Chris & Andrea only ever produced 1 680 bottles of Chardonnay from this high altitude Kaaimansgat vineyard and this is a rare opportunity to secure a few bottles. It possesses a calm coolness, with stone fruit and lemon biscuits on the nose. The palate has a creamy, limey, citrus character with exotic spice notes and is full but balanced by a fresh, tight finish. This profound wine tastes as fresh and precise as it did on release and has many years ahead of it.
Stellenbosch Chardonnay: In their search for special Chardonnay sites, Chris & Andrea fell in love with this exciting vineyard on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. It has a Maritime Influence that leads to a clean, precise bouquet of citrus blossom, flint and salinity. The palate is packed with citrus zest and crushed shells and has a textured, vibrant and long finish.

Leeu Passant Elandskloof Chardonnay 2015:
'Several of South Africa’s best Chardonnays come from the high altitude Elandskloof vineyard and this is not far behind them in its first vintage. Creamy, rich and aromatic, it has attractive stone fruit notes, piercing minerality and a patina of stylish oak. 2018-23.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 93/100
'It has a well-defined, attractive bouquet with very slight reduction, praline and dried honey emerging with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a slightly waxiness, impressive weight in the mouth with a hint of sour lemon counterbalancing the controlled richness and weight on the finish. It probably needs another year in bottle.' - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Apr 2017)
Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2017:
‘Pure & fine 2017 has subtle citrus complexity, discreet white peach fleshiness, hint perfumed oak. Incredibly well crafted, totally unforced, all elements moulded into cohesive whole, hallmark savoury conclusion. For ageing many years. Barrel fermented, wholebunch, year in 225/500L oak, 30% new, unfiltered. Also in 1.5L.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2020, 5* (97/100)
‘From a Helderberg vineyard 400m above sea level. Matured for 12 months in 225-litre barrels, 30% new. A very expressive nose with a top note of blossom before lemon and grapefruit plus a hint of reduction. The palate has lovely depth of fruit, coated acidity and a super-long, salty finish. It’s a beautifully judged wine with great poise and detail and my favourite vintage to date.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100 (Jun 2019)
‘Racy and savoury and very well done. Long and classy and I suspect this would withstand comparison with many a white burgundy at the same price.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Oct 2019)
‘Single vineyard on the maritime slopes of the Helderberg where temperatures seldom rise above 28 degrees C. One of the rare sites that the Mullineux’s actually have to wait for the acidity to drop before picking. The aromatics are pure and lifted expressing the usual crystallinity of the style and site. Bottled in October 2018, the wine is still super youthful, taut and fresh but with a touch of creamy malo to take the edge off the electric acidity. Beautifully intense and citrus driven, the wine has a wonderful textural balance and freshness with incredible poise and focus. Long and pin point, superb harmony and purity, this wine has impressive salinity and tart lemon / lime brilliance and brightness to invigorate the palate. A great effort.’ – Greg Sherwood MW, 95+/100 (May 2019)
