About this Item

2016 Peter Max Pinot Noir
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Based in the Walker Bay region of South Africa, Crystallum is run by brothers Peter-Allan and Andrew Finlayson, 3rd-generation winemakers who focus on Burgundy varieties. Within only a little over 15 years (interestingly the first vintage was a singular Sauvignon in 2007!) this outfit has positioned itself as one of the top proponents of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in South Africa. Awards locally and internationally are in fact unrivalled, and the wines are sold out every year on release.

Peter and Max are the first names of the growers who supplied the fruit for the first vintage of this wine. The fruit sources have since changed but the name remains to honor the beginnings of the multi-vineyard Pinot Noir blend. The philosophy here is to use the different batches to form a blend that is more than the sum of its parts.

Critics Ratings

‘Smoky and spicy with plentiful red fruit and very bright acidic line. Loads of freshness here, although there’s a bit of rubbery character too, and the alcohol seems a little warm on the finish. Pumped up Pinot.’ – Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16/20 (Jun 2018)

‘Soft strawberry fruit, wisp of smoke & chocolate, delicate 2016 similarly styled to 2015 (4.5 stars, 93 pts); more easygoing, slightly less focus though. From Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, Overberg & Elandskloof grapes, 30% whole bunches, 10% new oak.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2018, 4*

‘Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, Overberg and Kaaimansgat. Matured for eight months in French oak, 10% new. Plums, black cherry and a little musk on the nose. Relatively rich and ripe with moderate acidity and fine tannins. Entirely likeable but relatively simple.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za (Aug 2017)
