Critics Ratings
‘This is a beautiful, precise and focused Pinot Noir. It leads with a nose of bright cherry and raspberry fruit that harmonizes seamlessly with soft tilled earth and floral characteristics. The palate is medium in weight but silky smooth, with fine tannins, wet-slate minerality and snappy, mouthwatering red-fruit flavors. Well balanced and integrated, this is enjoyable now, but should hold through 2024.’ – Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 91/100 (Jul 2019)
‘Healthy mid garnet. Proper fully ripe nose. Pretty opulent (but not sickly) attack. If presented with this in Burgundy, you might rather fall in love – if you knew it was grown in a ripe vintage. Some complexity and certainly enough freshness. I'm serving it cellar cool and can imagine it might all go a bit soupy if served too warm. But I enjoy the attack, precison and follow-through. It might strike some palates as a bit too sweet though.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Jun 2019)
‘The 2017 Nom Pinot Noir comes from vines planted in 2008. It was aged in 25-30% new oak and the rest in second-fill. There is 10% whole bunch here, slightly less than previous vintages. It has a clean, pure bouquet of morello cherry, raspberry and emerging hints of rose petal. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannin, nice edginess, sappy red berry fruit and a saline finish that lingers nicely. This is a superb follow-up to the 2016.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 91/100 (Aug 2018)
‘Jessica Saurwein seems to grow ever more assured when it comes to the making of her Nom Pinot Noir, the 2017 being her third vintage. From Kaaimansgat grapes, the nose has a musky top note before red and black fruit, herbs and oak spice while the palate displays good fruit density, fresh acidity and fine tannins. It’s a composed, carefully made wine which carries its 14.5% alcohol well.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 91/100 (Jun 2018)
‘This is the fourth release of Jessica Saurwein’s Pinot Noir, sourced from the famous Kaaimansgat vineyard in Elandskoof and is the best I’ve tasted so far. Still youthful, it has raspberry and pomegranate fruit flavours, skilfully integrated (25% new) oak and the acidity and minerality of the site. The high alcohol doesn’t show on the palate. 2019-24’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 92/100
