Mahogany specimen display cabinet, late 19th century
the carved and moulded gable top with central foliate carving, above a pair of glazed doors enclosing three long shelves, the lower section with a pair of panelled doors enclosing multiple short drawers and two long drawers, raised on ball-and-claw feet, brass fittings

Notes

Specimen display cabinets were made to house, organise and display collected objects. With the expansion of scientific collecting in the 19th century, naturalists and scholars who assembled collections of shells, minerals, plants, fossils, insects, etc., used the many small drawers to separate and organise their specimens.
