About this Item
Notes
Each vase is pencil-painted with stylised chrysanthemum, lotus and daisy sprays issuing from rockwork. The group forms part of the Vung Tau cargo, one of the most important documented Southeast Asian shipwreck assemblages of late 17th-century Chinese export porcelain.
The Vung Tau cargo was recovered in 1992 from a shipwreck discovered off the coast of southern Vietnam. The vessel is believed to have sunk around 1690 while transporting a cargo of Chinese export porcelain from the Kangxi period. The ceramics reflect the extensive maritime trade networks of the late 17th century and were later dispersed through international auctions following their recovery.
