About this Item
A Chinese blue and white porcelain bottle recovered from the wreck of the Geldermalsen, c. 1750
Notes
This small bottle is part of the celebrated “Nanking Cargo” recovered from the Geldermalsen shipwreck. Bottles of this type formed part of the export porcelain trade destined for European markets. The heavy marine accretions are typical of long-submerged shipwreck ceramics and provide strong visual evidence of the object’s underwater history and archaeological context.
Provenance
Christie’s, Hilton Hotel, Amsterdam Auction, May 1986.
Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of the Dutch East Indiaman Geldermalsen.
Private Collection.
